KIRKSVILLE, MO -- A business in Kirksville is doing what it can to make electricity as environmentally-friendly as possible.

Kelly's Furniture will be installing solar panels to produce electricity.

Mark Krueger, President of Kelly's Furniture, said he's pleased in becoming an energy efficient business.

"The solar energy is going to do a couple of things for Kelley's furniture," Krueger said. "First off it's going to reduce our energy load. It is a renewable source, so we will actually be selling energy back to Ameren UE and into what they call the grid. So hopefully it can save us some money and we can pass that along to our consumers."

Krueger tells me they're also changing all the lighting to LED bulbs, by doing that, he tells us they'll reduce the electricity load by about 70 percent.

Krueger tells KTVO that there are about 300 light fixtures and all will be ‘Solarized’.

Vaughn Prost, the CEO of Missouri Solar Application, said the solar panels that will be installed will generate electricity from the sun.

"It's called a photovoltaic process. It's a physics term, photo meaning the light which shines on these cells to generate electricity. They are little battery-like cells, that all hook together to create direct power."

Prost adds that by going energy-efficient, you are able to reduce your electricity bill. He says the cost of solar has dropped tremendously, so you can reduce your electric bill and save big money.

It will take about three weeks before Kelly's Furniture is completely operated off solar power.
