OTTUMWA, IOWA -- It is that time of the year when children have runny noses, coughs and fevers. Do you know when your child is sick enough to stay home from school?

The Ottumwa School District is already seeing an increase of students with the flu.

School nurses say if your child has a 100 degree temperature or higher or has vomiting or diarrhea, you should keep them home from school.

If the fever is persistent and continues for more than three days or your child becomes dehydrated, then you should see medical attention.

“Well we have just started right after Thanksgiving break to see more children and older students too coming down with flu-like symptoms. I know yesterday we had a couple of our buildings that had a higher than 10% absentee rate due to symptoms similar to flu-like symptoms and upper respiration so yes, the numbers are starting to increase,” said Nancy Emanuel, head nurse of Ottumwa Community Schools District.

Nurse Nancy said it’s not too late for you or your child to get a flu shot.
