JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Methane gas produced by animal waste could be used to meet Missouri's renewable energy mandate.

The state Senate gave initial approval Tuesday to a bill adding methane gas from animal waste to a list of approved renewable energy resources.

A 2008 voter-approved law requires utilities to get 15 percent of their electricity from renewable resources by 2021. Other accepted resources include solar energy, hydropower and biomass burning.

Missouri is among the states most dependent on coal for power.
