JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri highway workers have been using beet juice to clear snow and ice from the state's roads.
The Missouri Department of Transportation says it has used 78,000 gallons of beet juice mixed with salt so far this winter.
MoDOT began using beet juice in 2006 across the northwestern part of the state. Last winter, the agency used more than 200,000 gallons statewide.
Beet juice is a byproduct of making sugar from sugar beets. The liquid is brown and dyes road salt the same color.
