Seniors Andy Chapman and Charlie Backus shined on Senior Day, combining for three goals and four assists, as the Truman men’s soccer team dismantled visiting Southwest Baptist 7-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Chapman recorded his second hat trick of the season, and Backus notched a three-assist match of his own on Senior Day in Kirksville.

The Bulldogs recognized Chapman, Backus, Kyle Menges and Mike Kane prior to the contest.

It took the Bulldogs (9-5-1, 6-2-1 MIAA) more than 20 minutes to get going, but a flurry of goals followed the breaking point in the 22nd minute when Tony Diepenbrock headed home a double assist from Backus and Nicolas Tolmais to put Truman ahead 1-0.

In the 25th, Felix Bruner scored off a second Backus assist, before Chapman scored his first of three first half goals in the 28th off a punt by keeper Drew Garrone.

Chapman then found the back of the net in the 32nd  to give the Bulldogs comfortable 5-0 halftime lead.

SBU (3-11-1, 1-7-1 MIAA) would score in the 54th, but Truman got it back to a five-goal margin in the 66th when Tolmais scored his second goal of the year off a Chapman cross.

Austin Hayden added the final goal in the 85th, beating the keeper on a breakaway following a pass from Brandon Visonnavong.

The Bulldogs out-shot SBU 23-8 on the day, including 10-4 on net. Twenty-two Bulldogs saw the field, including Garrone, who started and played nearly 70 minutes in net, and Nick Wallner, who came on for the final 20 minutes of action.

The seven goals marked the most by any Truman team since a 7-0 win against Maryville (Mo.) on Oct. 1, 2010. Chapman now has a dozen goals on the season, with Backus adding an MIAA-best – and possibly NCAA-best pending Monday’s newest stat release – 14 assists.

Truman will play one final regular season match on Friday, Oct. 26, starting at 3:00 pm at home against Upper Iowa.
