Truman’s Becka McHenry was selected as the MIAA Women’s Basketball Player of the week after the Bulldogs went 1-1 against two nationally ranked teams last week.
McHenry recorded the first triple-double in MIAA women’s basketball since 2006 and first for Truman since 1998 in a five-point loss to No. 16 Pittsburg State on the road last Wednesday night.
The junior from Fraser, Mich., had 14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in 38 minutes of action as Truman built up a 15-point first half lead only to see the Gorillas go to the line 17 more times in the final 20 minutes (23-6) and rally for the win.
On Saturday, McHenry scored 12 and dished out another eight assists as the Bulldogs knocked off their third ranked opponent this season in throttling No. 17 Emporia State 78-60.
McHenry scored 11 of her 12 points in the second half, including the Bulldogs’ third straight three-
pointer in a two minute span that turned the game from a three-point Truman advantage to a 12-point lead that would never fall below double-digits.
It was Truman’s first win against Emporia State since 2008, first win at home against the Lady Hornets since 2002 and largest victory ever in the 47 meetings between the two schools.
It was also the third win this season against a ranked opponent.
For the season, McHenry is leading the team with a 13.4 points per game mark while pulling down 5.2 rebounds and dishing out 5.0 rebounds per game.
This is the first player of the week honor for McHenry and first for the Bulldogs since Laura Joya earned the honor during the 2009-10 season.
