The Board of Directors of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union approved today (Jan. 19) that the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena will host the 2011 Iowa State High School Volleyball Tournament November 9-12.

“We are confident that the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena will be an outstanding venue for the 2011 State Volleyball Tournament,” said IGHSAU Executive Director Mike Dick.

“Our staff was impressed with the facility when we toured the arena on January 3rd and we all believe that the Ice Arena will provide the same great atmosphere for volleyball fans and players that the U.S. Cellular Center has provided since 1991.

I appreciate how the city of Cedar Rapids has stepped up in securing an appropriate venue for our tournament.”

The U.S. Cellular Center, home of the IGHSAU State Volleyball Tournament since 1991, is unavailable for the 2011 tournament due to construction of the new Cedar Rapids Convention and Events Complex, forcing the change of venue.

The construction project is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2012 tournament to return to the U.S. Cellular Center.

The U.S. Cellular Center is contracted to host the Iowa State High School Volleyball Tournament through 2015.

The Cedar Rapids Ice Arena, which opened in 2000, has a seating capacity of 4,250.

It serves as the home venue for the Cedar Rapids Roughriders of the United States Hockey League.
