TURNBERRY, SCOTLAND (AP) -- The improbable dream remains alive for Tom Watson.
The 59-year old experienced his way around Turnberry for the third straight day and leads the British Open. The five-time champ
who first won the event in 1975 and last won it in 1983, shot a 1-over 71 to lead by one-shot.
Watson pulled in front with birdies on 16 and 17 to leave himself 4-under par for the 54 holes and front of much younger players. Matthew Goggin is 35 and Ross Fisher is 28. They share second after Goggin shot 69 and Fisher posted a
70. Fisher is an expectant father and is ready to leave the tournament if his wife goes into labor.
Lee Westwood and Retief Goosen are in the hunt just two off the pace, while Jim Furyk and Stewart Cink are three behind.
If Watson can hold on and hoist the Claret Jug one more time, he would tie the record for most British Open wins and become the oldest winner of a major championship.
