(AP) -- Padraig Harrington made the most of his late entry into the PGA Grand Slam of Golf with a 5-under 66 on Tuesday.

Harrington was picked as an alternate three days ago for British Open champion Ernie Els, who has a minor ankle injury.

The Irishman made seven birdies at Port Royal Golf Club to build a two-shot lead over Masters champion Bubba Watson in the 36-hole event for the year's major champions.

U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson had a 68. Keegan Bradley, filling in for PGA champion Rory McIlroy, had a 72.

Harrington, a three-time major champion, lost in a playoff at the Grand Slam to Angel Cabrera in 2007 and to Jim Furyk in 2008. Ian Woosnam in 1991 is the only European to win the PGA Grand Slam.
