Truman freshman Seth Jackson was named the 2011-2012 MIAA Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Year, while both he and junior guard Tom Norton landed on the all-MIAA honorable mention squad, announced Tuesday by the league office.
Jackson became just the third Bulldog to win the MIAA’s Freshman of the Year honor since its inception in 1994 and first since Grant Agbo in 2003-2004.
He led the Bulldogs in scoring at 11.9 points per game and added 4.2 rebounds per game on the season.
Both of those numbers (12.3 ppg; 4.8 rpg) went up during league play, as the St. Louis-native topped the 20-point mark three times, including a season-high 25 in his collegiate debut against Central Christian (Mo.).
He posted 17 double-figure outings, shooting 42% from the floor and 67% from the free throw line on 162 total attempts.
Jackson was also listed on the all-MIAA honorable mention squad alongside Norton, who ranked second on the squad at 11.8 points per game.
The Bloomington, Ill.-native made 72 three-pointers at a 37% clip and went for a career-best 34 points against Northwest Missouri on Feb. 15.
He had two games with at least eight three-pointers and another with seven, finishing the season with only two games without a triple.
He will enter the 2012-13 season tied for third all-time in Truman history with 201 career three-pointers, needing just 37 to catch Brian Basich for second all-time.
The Bulldogs finished the season with an 8-20 record for first-year head coach Matt Woodley, tying for eighth in the MIAA with a 5-15 conference mark.
Northwest Missouri head coach Ben McCollum was named the MIAA Coach of the Year.
