The Truman women’s basketball team suffered one of their toughest shooting nights of the season as the Bulldogs lost 60-53 to the University of Central Missouri on Wednesday night in Pershing Arena.
Truman shot just 30% from the field and was 3-of-18 from three-point.
The Bulldogs (9-6; 4-6 MIAA) led by a dozen with six minutes left in the first half but a three-pointer by Renae Shippy with eight seconds left in the period closed out a 12-4 Jennies’ run to cut the lead down to four at 27-23.
The shooting woes worsened in the second half for the Bulldogs as the Jennies kept chipping away and finally took the lead for good on a jumper by Brielle Wattley with 9:13 remaining.
Central (12-4; 6-4 MIAA) maintained only a one-possession lead for the next five minutes before Nicole Caddell scored to make it 52-47 off an inbounds play.
With the Jennies up four, Nicole Gloor picked off a pass and raced to the other end but her fast break lay-up was too strong. Alyssa Rhodes would seal it with a pair of free throws with 34 seconds left.
Truman ended the game with 22 more shot attempts than the Jennies (72-50) but both teams had 22 made field goals.
Central was 12-of-18 from the line while Truman managed just a 6-of-11 showing. The ‘Dogs had 15 offensive rebounds but came away with just 14 second chance points.
Jennifer Conway led Truman with 15 points going 7-of-13 from the field and added seven rebounds. Gloor added 14 off the bench.
After a slow start, Central’s Caddell scored 12 in the second half to lead the Jennies with 15 points. Saraethea Brown was 5-of-9 from the field for 11 points and Kaneesha Lee chipped in nine points with a game-high nine rebounds.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday as they host Missouri Southern State University at 1:00 p.m.
The Lions defeated Northwest Missouri 83-75 in overtime on Wednesday night.
Saturday is Daddy/Daughter day with each getting free admission to the game and a free bag of popcorn.
