Truman volleyball middle blocker Megan Sharpe became just the third player in program history to be named an AVCA all-American three times after picking up second-team national honors on Monday afternoon.
The junior has been an all-American each of her three seasons at Truman.
Sharpe (Edwardsville, Ill., Edwardsville) was the Bulldogs’ leading offensive weapon in a 2011 campaign that saw the program reach the 20-win mark for the 22nd straight season.
She played in all 34 matches, averaging 3.02 kills and 1.09 blocks per set while hitting .351. She had just 95 errors on nearly 850 total swings and posted 141 total blocks to surpass her previous single-season career-best by nearly 30.
After being named the AVCA Freshman of the Year and an Honorable Mention all-American in 2009,
Sharpe moved up one rung to the third-team in 2010.
With her second-team accolades in 2011, the 5-foot-11 junior now joins just Sarah Shearman (2004, 2005, 2006) and Allie Cherven (2006, 2007, 2008) as the program’s only three-time all-Americans.
No player has been recognized four times, though Shearman was the National Freshman of the Year in 2003 and Cherven transferred to Truman as a sophomore.
Sharpe eclipsed the 1,000-kill mark in an Oct. 29th win against Fort Hays State to become just the 13th player in Truman history to reach the milestone.
She also is just the fifth Truman player to record more than 1,000 kills and 350 blocks in a career.
The Truman volleyball program, under the direction of third-year head coach Ben Briney, has seen 12 players earn 21 AVCA all-American awards, including at least one per year dating back to the 2001 season.
