The Truman women’s basketball team battled back from an 18-point second half deficit, got a game-tying basket by Becka McHenry at the buzzer, fell behind by a quick six in overtime then scorched the University of Central Missouri Jennies for 13 straight and a 78-74 victory on snowy Wednesday night in Warrensburg.
The Jennies scored the game’s first eight points and got a career night from Renae Shippy, who tallied 10 of the first 12 Central points, after coming into the night averaging just over three a game.
Central built up an 18-point lead at 41-23 with15:35 left before the Bulldogs started the comeback.
Down five with under three minutes to play, Amy Galey picked off a pass and scored to cut the lead to two and then drilled a three-pointer to tie the game at 58 apiece.
The Jennies would score the next five with Erin Redmond knocking down a trey with 1:17 showing.
Galey buried her second triple with 52 ticks left and after a big defensive stand that forced the Jennies 29th turnover of the game, McHenry took a pass from Breanna Daniels and floated the game-tying basket in as the buzzer expired.
Shippy struck again as she scored the first six points for the Jennies on two three-pointers to start overtime.
However, Jennifer Conway and Breanna Daniels scored on back-to-back possessions to cut the margin to two.
McHenry then tied the game at 2:09 left at 69 apiece and then notched her career high 20th point with 68 seconds left to give Truman their first lead of the night.
Kiersten Orton missed a three-pointer for Central with McHenry grabbing the defensive board.
On the other end, McHenry found Conway off a screen and the sophomore took advantage of a mismatch by getting the hoop with the free throw for a five-point Bulldog lead.
Bianca Szafarowicz picked off another pass by Central and Galey was perfect from the line making four attempts in the final 15 seconds to secure the Bulldogs fifth road victory of the season.
McHenry finished with 20 points followed by Galey’s 16, Daniels’ 15 and Conway’s 11. McHenry was 10-of-15 from the field while Galey made 5-of-8 shots.
Shippy led the Jennies with a career high 18 points on seven of nine from the field and four, three-pointers. Kara Flemming added 10 points with 12 assists.
The Bulldogs make the turn in conference play and will start the second half with a road game at Missouri Southern on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Truman handed the Lions a 71-58 loss in Pershing Arena in the conference opener on Dec. 1st. Missouri Southern lost to Northwest Missouri in their last outing 75-64.
