WICHITA, KAN. -- Sophomores Ryan Banning and Colton Schmitz placed second in their respective weight classes as the Truman Wrestling competed in the Newman (Kan.) University Jet Invitational on Sunday.
Banning (Wildwood, Mo., Eureka), wrestling at 125 pounds, pinned his first two opponents, including Central Oklahoma’s Zach Housley before being pinned himself in the championship match by Jeff Vesta of Neosha.
Schmitz (Kirksville, Mo., Kirksville) followed a similar path as he earned fall wins in his first two bouts with a first period pin of Ben Morgan from UCO. In the title match, Schmitz lost to Newman’s Mitch Arnold by a narrow 3-1 score. Arnold was voted the most valuable wrestler of the tournament.
Three other Bulldogs, Nick Shea (Jefferson City, Mo., Helias High School) at 133, Devon Fenstermaker (Barnhart, Mo., Seckman) at 157 and Zach Hayes (Maryland Heights, Mo., Parkway North) at 184, picked up third place medals during the tournament.
As a team, Truman finished with 97.5 points which was good for fourth out of eight schools. The Bulldogs finished ahead of rival Central Missouri and host Newman while Central Oklahoma won the team competition with 156 points.
The Bulldogs will compete in the highly touted Midwest Classic next weekend hosted by the University of Indianapolis.
