A point guard from Alabama and a post player from St. Louis are the latest additions to the list of Indian Hills’ basketball recruits signed by head coach Jeff Kidder.
Joining the Warriors for the 2010-11 season will be Giovanni Smith, a 6-0, 180-pound guard from Montgomery, Alabama and Will Clark, a 6-9, 250-pounder from St. Louis, Missouri.
Smith led his Brewbaker Tech team to the Alabama Class 4A championship game last winter where they lost to Ramsay High School. He had 13 points in the title game and averaged 12.2 points and 5.5 assists a game as a senior while shooting over 44% from three-point range.
Smith, who is described as a very quick and explosive point guard with unlimited range, was a second-team all-state selection as a junior and a senior. He was also chosen to play in this summer’s Alabama coaches’ North-South all-star game.
Clark played at Rockwood Summit High School in Fenton, Missouri where he averaged 18.9 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.2 blocks as a senior before heading to Christian Life Center Academy in Humble, Texas last year. He originally signed with Texas Southern University.
“I’m excited to have a quality guard like Gio,” coach Kidder said in talking about his highly-regarded backcourt player. “He can play the point and the scoring guard positions. He has a strong, powerful body that will allow him to be a great defender and scorer.”
The Warriors had previously signed D.J. Bennett, a post player from Chicago.
They have further fortified the position with the signing of Clark, whom Kidder said is an important player to have on the squad.
“To find a true center at any level is very hard to do,” the IHCC coach said. “Will has great hands and feet and can really finish around the basket. I expect him to be a special player for the Warriors this year.”
Adding Smith and Clark puts the Warriors’ roster at 12 players for the upcoming campaign. Kidder hopes to fill a couple more spots in the next week or so.
