OTTUMWA, IOWA -- A former college and professional soccer player has been named the new men’s and women’s soccer coach at Indian Hills Community College. Doug Seigle will be the head coach for both programs at IHCC in the college’s fourth year offering the sport.
Seigle says moving to Iowa to become the coach of the Warriors is “like coming home,” having played professional soccer in Sioux City and coached at Luther College in Decorah.
The new IHCC coach says he is enthused about taking over a relatively young program. “The expectations may not be high,” Seigle says, “but I look forward to taking both programs to new heights. We’ll put solid teams out there and, hopefully, surprise some people.”
Seigle comes to Indian Hills after a year as the goalkeepers coach for both the men and women at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas. The KWU men qualified for the NAIA national tournament last year and the women finished second in their conference. Seigle also coached a club soccer team in Kansas for two years.
Prior to his stint in Kansas, Seigle was an assistant coach for a year at St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minnesota, head men’s coach at Montana State University for three years, coached high school and club teams in Montana and was the assistant men’s and women’s coach at Luther College for four years.
A Fayetteville, Georgia native, Seigle played college soccer at Viterbo University in LaCrosse, Wisconsin where he was a three-time NAIA All-American goalkeeper. After college, he played professionally for teams in Sioux City, Omaha and Atlanta in an outdoor league and played indoor soccer for squads in Tupelo, Mississippi and Tallahassee, Florida.
Rod Campbell, who was the head women’s soccer coach at IHCC for two years and the men’s and women’s assistant coach last season, will be Seigle’s assistant this fall.
Practice for the Indian Hills teams will begin in just over a week. And Seigle says he’s very excited to get the season underway. “We’ll set team and individual goals at the first practice. But we won’t concentrate on wins and losses, but rather on getting better every day.” The IHCC coach adds, “As a former goalkeeper, I consider myself a defensive-minded coach and I expect us to be solid on defense.”
The Indian Hills men’s and women’s teams will each have one scrimmage before starting their regular season schedules. The women will open at home against Parkland CC on Aug. 28; the men will play their opener at home against Iowa Lakes Aug. 31. The home matches for both teams will be played again this fall at the Walsh Soccer Complex in Ottumwa.
