Five Bulldogs placed in the season opening Loras (Iowa) College Invitational on Saturday for the Truman Wrestling team.
Veterans Colton Schmitz and Helmut Rentschler each placed seventh in the Gold Division while newcomers JJ Dorrell, Dustin McClintlock and Chase Wrisinger placed in the Silver Division.
Schmitz, after redshirting last season, won his first match 3-1 before dropping to the wrestleback side of the bracket following a major decision loss. Schmitz would win 4-2, fall 3-2 then win the seventh place match in the 165-pound bracket.
Rentschler posted a 2-2 mark in the 197-pound bracket as he took the seventh place match by a 7-0 decision.
Dorrell won his first collegiate match in the opening round with a 9-3 decision and picked up a major decision victory later in the tournament to place eighth in the 125-pound bracket of the Silver Division.
McClintock was the highest placer of any ‘Dog with a fifth place showing in the 157-pound bracket. McClintlock recorded the team’s only fall victory in the first round of the wrestlebacks and had a tech fall win in the fifth place match.
Wrisinger was sixth in the 174-pound bracket with a 7-2 win that advanced him in the tournament.
Truman will compete in the Knox (Ill.) College Open next weekend.
