The Washburn Ichabods edged out a 1-0 victory in the four-game series opener against the Truman baseball team on Friday afternoon.

The two teams will continue the series with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.

Brett Ash pitched a complete-game shutout as Washburn used the small ball to take the opener 1-0.

Ash struck out eight while walking and hitting one to pick up his first win of the season. Josh Wilder and Ben Reynoldson each laid down perfect bunts to start the fifth inning and advanced up into scoring position on a balk by Tyler Stefan (0-4).

John Calhoun would groundout to third to drive in Wilder for the only run of the game.

The Bulldogs had golden opportunities in both the fourth and eighth innings.

A two-out double by Daniel Jewett followed by a walk and basehit by Brett Marino gave Weston Lewis a chance with the bases load.

Lewis fouled a ball down the first base line by mere inches before striking out to end the inning.

In the eighth, Zak Larkin hit a leadoff single and got to third with two outs before Paul Trenhaile rocketed a liner right to the Ichabod third basemen.

Stefan pitched eight solid innings, striking out seven and walking just one while Chris Allard struck out the side in the top of the ninth.
