(AP) -- North Carolina has declared top receiver Dwight Jones ineligible for the Independence Bowl after the senior allowed his name and photo to be used on a flyer promoting a party at a club in his hometown.

The school has applied to the NCAA for reinstatement after the secondary violation. In a statement, Jones apologized for creating a distraction and said he has canceled the party being given by a family member.

The school's compliance office has sent a cease-and-desist letter to the party promoters.

The flier surfaced online Monday and advertised a New Year's Eve party for Jones' birthday in Burlington, about 30 miles from campus.

Jones had 79 catches for 1,119 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Tar Heels, who play Missouri in Monday's Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La.
