The first fifteen minutes told the tale for the rest of the afternoon at the Truman Soccer Pitch with Upper Iowa pulling a 3-1 victory in the home opener against the Truman men’s soccer team.

It only took four minutes for Upper Iowa (6-3-1) to put their first goal on the board.

Off of a free kick by Marco Garcia, senior forward Frank Atchison scored his fourth goal of the season.

Not five minutes later, Upper Iowa’s Derek Oelmann tallied their second goal of the match off a corner kick by Garcia. Finally, in the 13th minute,

Oelmann connected again with the back of the net after receiving a pass to the left side by senior Jason Olsgard. That goal marked Oelmann’s team leading eighth goal of the 2011 season.

After starting the second period in a 3-0 deficit, the Bulldogs (3-6) tried to rally back, but Andy Chapman’s goal in the 63rd minute was the only one of the 11 shots in the second half to find the back of the net.

Chapman scored off of a corner kick by John Fernandez, giving him his second goal of the year and Fernandez’s first assist of the season.

The Bulldogs led the Peacocks in shots, 18-11, corner kicks 3-2 and shots on goal 7-3.

Truman goalkeeper Drew Garrone recorded 81 minutes in the net after coming in for Tyler Knierim after the 9th minute. Neither goalkeeper for the ‘Dogs recorded a save for the afternoon.

Truman will take the field again on Friday, Oct. 7th, in a 3:00 pm match-up against the Tigers of Fort Hays (Kan.) State University.

This will be the first meeting between the two schools as Fort Hays is in their inaugural season of having men’s soccer.
