Junior Kelsey Twellman put home the game-winner four minutes into the first overtime on Thursday night, as the Truman women’s soccer team opened MIAA play with a 2-1 road win at Missouri Southern.
After the two teams headed to the half tied at one apiece, the Bulldogs (2-3-2, 1-0 MIAA) pummeled Missouri Southern (0-5-1, 0-1 MIAA) throughout the second half and beginning of overtime, out-shooting the Lions 14-2 in the game’s final 50 minutes.
MSSU put Truman in an early hole, when the Lions’ Shannon Kuhn scored her fourth goal of the season in the game’s third minute off a free kick to put the home team ahead, 1-0.
Truman’s sophomore forward Trisha Shoemaker returned the favor in the 21st minute, however, scoring an unassisted goal – her team-leading third of the season – to even the score at 1-1.
It would take nearly 75 minutes before Truman sealed the match, as Twellman shook the nets with her free kick goal at the 94:45 mark to end the match and snap a four-match winless streak for the Bulldogs.
It was the St. Louis-native’s second goal of the season and first game-winner of 2011.
Senior Jayne Grisham played the entire match in goal, saving two Lions shots. For the match, Truman out-shot MSSU, 16-7, and took eight corner kicks to the Lions’ three.
The Bulldogs return to action this Saturday afternoon at 12:00 pm in Bolivar, Mo., to face Southwest Baptist.
