Women’s Basketball Coach Michael Smith has added two more high school recruits to his 2011 signing class. Michell Tomczak from Streamwood, Ill. and Sarah Gaeddert from McPherson, Kan. join the five other members of the incoming class to Truman.

Tomczak, a 6-foot-3 post player, averaged a double-double last season at Streamwood High School as she helped lead her team to a 22-6 record.

She averaged 13 points, 10 rebounds and added four blocks while earning all-Area and honorable mention all-state accolades. She was a unanimous Upstate Eight all-conference pick.

Gaeddert (gah-dirt) is a 6-foot post player that helped the McPherson High School team to consecutive Kansas state tournament appearances.

She averaged seven points and five rebounds per game while earning honorable mention all-State and Academic all-State honors.

“Signing these two helps fill out our post positions for next year,” said Coach Michael Smith. “They both bring a winning mentality to our program and along with that a great work ethic.

I’m really excited about this years recruiting class joining our nine returners and feel we have quality depth at every position that should make for some very competitive practices.”

Smith also  has added a pair of junior college teammates to the 2011-12 roster. Taylor Smith, a 5-foot-9 guard, Rachael Remick, a 6-foot-1 post, will join the Bulldogs after two years at Kirkwood Community College (Iowa) in which they won the NJCAA National Championship in their freshman season.

Smith, originally from Leon, Iowa and Central Decatur High School, was a second team all-region selection last season and has played in all 70 games during her first two years at Kirkwood.

She averaged nine points, four steals and four assists a night. In high school, Smith averaged over 14 points, seven rebounds, four steals and nearly four assists to earn second-team All-state by the Des Moines Register.
She broke two school records as she recorded 11 assists and 10 steals in a game.

She finished her high school career with 1,197 points while also participating in Track/Cross Country, Volleyball and Softball. She is the daughter of David and Kathy Smith.

Remick, originally from Hillsboro, Iowa and Harmony High School, was a third team all-region choice last season as she averaged over six points and four rebounds per game.

She also started in all 70 games at Kirkwood as the team went 62-8 during that span. In high school, she scored 1,241 points while earning second team all-state, first team all-conference, all-Hawkeye and All-Democrat.

Her senior season, Remick averaged 15 points, seven rebounds and nearly four blocks a game. She is the daughter of Larry and Lisa Remick.

“Taylor and Rachael bring a high basketball IQ and work ethic to our program, there success the past two seasons at Kirkwood will help continue to take our program to new heights,” said Coach Michael Smith. “I expect both of these players to come in and make an immediate impact next season.”

The pair will join early signees of Ally Norton (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic HS), Aqua Corpening (Columbia, Mo./Hickman HS) and Allison Wiese (Geneseo, Ill./Geneseo HS) on next year’s women’s basketball squad.
