Truman pitcher Christian Witt has been named the MIAA Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season and the fourth time for a Bulldog player this season after a two-hit, complete game shutout over Nebraska Omaha on Saturday.
Witt )used 109 pitches to set a career high in strikeouts with 12 in shutting down the high-powered Maverick offense in the Bulldogs 4-0 win.
It was the first time in 107 games (2009)that UNO had been shutout after averaging 7.44 runs per game and hitting .344 (seventh best in Division II). It was the fifth shutout this season registered by the Bulldogs which is the most single-season shutouts since 1976 (six).
Witt retired the first 11 hitters in order before a two-out single in the fourth broke up the streak.
He allowed another hit in the fifth and walked his only batter in the top of the seventh, which was erased on a double-play.
His 12 strikeouts were the most by a Bulldog in a game since Brant Kraner fanned 17 on April 29, 2000, a span of 11 years.
It was Witt’s third start of the season and he is 4-1 with a 2.30 ERA in 31.1 innings pitched. In his last five appearances, with three starts, he has allowed just three earned runs in 22 innings pitched.
Truman has had more MIAA players of the week (hitter and pitchers) than any other conference school this season.
The Bulldogs have had five winners with Ryan Trimble and Witt winning the award twice and Jarrett Eiskina once, while Central Missouri has had four winners and Emporia State, Missouri Western and Fort Hays State all have had three award winners.
