Sophomore Laura Miller broke through with a two-out single to right field in the bottom of the eighth, allowing Alex Weber to score the game-winning run in Thursday’s second game and pick up a softball split with Pittsburg (Kan.) State. The Gorillas took game one, 3-1, before Truman rebounded with an 8-7 thriller in the second game.

The two squads seesawed in the second game, as the Bulldogs rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a 5-2 lead through four innings. After PSU scored two in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 7-5 lead, Truman loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the sixth. Alyssa Perry  then singled home two with a shot to center, knotting the game at seven apiece, but the ’Dogs couldn’t get the go-ahead run home.

After a scoreless seventh, Bulldog pitcher Beth Schnurbusch  worked around a 1-out double in the eighth to keep the game tied at seven, leading to Miller’s heroics in the bottom half of the inning.

Weber reached, going 4-for-4 in the game, marking the team’s first four-hit individual effort of the year, while both Mary Manley  and Bridget Schade  notched three hits each. Schade also blasted her third homerun of the year in the second inning.

That effort followed a frustrating game one for the ’Dogs, who committed three errors and gave up single runs in the first, fourth and seventh innings to fall 3-1. Christine Ulseslogged the team’s lone RBI, plating Miller in the first with an RBI single, but the bats were quiet from there as Tiffany Brown picked up the Gorilla win.

Kelsey Bollman (Maquoketa, Iowa) recorded the only multi-hit game, going 2-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt, for Truman as Elizabeth Grover  picked up the loss in the circle.

Truman (14-12, 2-2 MIAA) will be off through the weekend following the postponement of Saturday’s games against Missouri Southern. The Bulldogs return to action next Friday (April 1) at Southwest Baptist (Mo.).
