DES MOINES, IOWA -- The final day in the state wrestling tournament in Iowa was a busy one.
Let’s start with the championship matches. In Class 2A Centerville’s Kyler Risher became champion at 140 lbs after winning a decision 11-3 over Brad Schwenke of Atlantic. Centerville finished as a team tied for 14th.
In Class 2A, Fairfield’s Dakota Simmons lost a 4-0 decision in the 125 lb championship match to Jacob Colon of Clear Lake.
In Class 1A Eddyville-Blakesburg’s Brett Roberts lost a 4-2 decision against Austin Even of Jesup in the 160 lb bout.
The Rockets had a great tournament as a whole. Jason Crosby lost a 4-3 decision today but finished in 4th at the 112 lb weight class. His older brother, Jake, who is a senior crushed his opponent Saturday 12-3 to claim 5th place at the 171 lb weight class. Fellow senior Nathan Van Zante won his bout today in a 10-2 decision against Brandon Chesnut of West Monona Onawa to finish 7th. The Rockets finished 6th as a team.
In Class 3A, Ottumwa’s Angelo Kelly lost his match by decision to Blake Spotts of Mason City 9-2. Kelly finished in 8th place. That’s good enough to medal. Kelly won zero matches his freshman year and finished in the top of his state his senior season.
In Class 2A, Fairfield’s Jeff Guttry was on fire. He won by fall against Elliott Wirkler of MFL-Central in the 171 lb weight class. Guttry finished 3rd in the state tournament. Fairfield as a team finished in 11th place.
Centerville’s Tanner Cowan lost his bout Saturday in a 10-4 decision in the 112 lb weight class. Cowan however finished 4th in Class 2A.
Finally Albia had three wrestlers medal. Freshman Shadow Leshen was pinned Saturday but he finished 8th at 103 lbs. Moving to 135 lbs, Matt White pounded Tyler Mitchell of Charles City in an 8-0 decision to finish 5th. His teammate Dakotah Poe lost his bout at the 152 lb weight class on Saturday by a 3-0 decision. Poe finished 4th in his weight class. Albia as a team finished 21st.
