JOPLIN, MO. -- Missouri Southern State University’s Jasmine Lovejoy did it on both ends of the court as the Lions handed the Truman women’s basketball team a 64-40 loss on Saturday in Joplin. Lovejoy scored 19 points and held Truman’s leading scorer Breanna Daniels scoreless for only the second time in her collegiate career.

The win gave the Lions a split in the season series with the Bulldogs after Truman defeated Southern 71-58 in Kirksville back on Dec. 1st.

Kelby Fritz gave Southern an early eight point lead but the Bulldogs battled back and took their first and only lead of the game on a basket by Becca McHenry at the 7:26 mark of the first half.

The Lions scored the final nine of 11 first half points and head to the locker room with a 27-21 lead.

The Bulldogs got to within five but a 10-0 run would swell the advantage to double-figures for the first time during the ball game and the Lions would never look back.

Southern would outscore the Bulldogs 37-19 in the final 20 minutes.

Freshman Bianca Szafarowicz led Truman in scoring with a modest eight points while the ‘Dogs were held to their lowest point total of the season. Daniels has 20 straight games scoring in double-figures heading into the contest but was held without a point since the second game of her collegiate career against Texas Women’s University on Nov. 26, 2008, a span of 55 games.

The Lions shot over 54% from the field with LaTice Jones adding 12 to Lovejoy’s 19 points.

The Bulldogs (8-8 overall; 6-6 MIAA) will return home on Wednesday in a big conference battle with Pittsburg State. Tip off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
