Bulldog swimming turns new page

SPRINGFIELD, MO. -- After over a month layoff and a coaching change, the Truman swimming teams returned to competitive action by facing Division I, Missouri State University in Springfield on Saturday. The women fell 148-57 while the men were downed by the Bears 153-48.

Anna Grinter brought home the squads only first place finish with a victory in the 200 Fly. Grinter touched the wall in a time of 2:09.67 with teammate Tanya Sylvester placing third in 2:13.70.

Casey Jepsen was second in the 200 free with a time of 1:56.66 while Jessica Jenkot was second in the 50 free. Other silvers for the Bulldog women were Stacey Wymer in the 200 back and the 400 free relay swam by Bailey Peterson, Carina Pautz, Sylvester and Jepsen.

The men posted three seconds in indivudal events with Jerod Simek in the 500 free, Michael Hernandez in the 200 breast and Taylor Frymire in the 50 free. The 400 medley relay team of Greg Taplin, Hernandez, Frymire and Eric Mikolajczyk also came in second with a time of 3:44.61.

The meet marked the first under the direction of Coach Jennifer Godlewski and assistant Danielle Odenthal. The duo replaced Mark Gole and Tim Sandfort, who resigned in late December prompting the cancelling of the team’s winter break training trip.

The teams will be home next weekend for senior day activities. The men will face Missouri S&T on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. and then on Saturday both teams will face rival Drury University (Mo.) at 1:00 p.m. in the Pershing Natatorium.
