(AP) -- Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says former
player Cedric Everson initially denied involvement in an alleged
sexual assault in 2007 but later apologized for lying.
In testimony at Everson's second-degree sexual abuse trial on
Wednesday, Ferentz said Everson claimed he went to a movie with
volleyball players and stayed in his dorm on Oct. 13, 2007.
Ferentz said he confronted Everson days later after his
teammates said he had been involved. The coach said Everson assured
him the players were lying, but later requested a meeting to
apologize for not being truthful.
Prosecutors say Everson snuck into a dorm room and sexually
assaulted a female athlete who was passed out after his teammate,
Abe Satterfield, first assaulted her.
He is fighting the charge, which carries up to 25 years in
prison.
An Iowa football player says one of his
teammates "grabbed a large amount of condoms" before going into a
dorm room where another player was with a female athlete.
Mike Daniels testified Wednesday that he walked Cedric Everson
to the room at his request and stayed outside after Everson went
in. After several minutes, he said Everson opened the door, gave a
"thumbs up sign," and Daniels left.
Prosecutors say player Abe Satterfield assaulted the woman in
that room and was in bed with her. They say Everson told
Satterfield to get out of bed and had sex with her while she was
asleep.
Daniels says he knew the victim but kept his distance because
she was "was overly friendly with everybody."
Everson is on trial for second-degree sexual abuse. Former Iowa football player Abe
Satterfield says a woman who claims she was raped "was the
aggressor" and it was her idea to have sex.
Satterfield testified Wednesday at the second-degree sexual
abuse trial of his former teammate, Cedric Everson.
Prosecutors say Satterfield had sex with the woman against her
will and then Everson assaulted her while she was passed out. The
woman testified Tuesday she told Satterfield to stop but he did
not.
Satterfield said the woman came on to him. He said Everson later
tapped him on the shoulder and he got out of bed. He said he fell
asleep on the floor and doesn't know what happened between Everson
and the woman.
Satterfield pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge and
testified under a deal with prosecutors.
