(AP) -- As concern grows that the 2011 NFL season could be in jeopardy, the NFL Players Association is warning governors and mayors in markets like St. Louis that the ramifications of a lockout would be costly.

KSDK-TV reports that the association wrote to Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon and St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay this week, warning that the lockout would cost St. Louis more than $160 million. NFLPA President Kevin Mawae says in the letter that players want to keep playing but owners are taking steps to potentially cancel the 2011 season.

The letter urges Nixon and Slay to stress to Rams owner Stan Kroenke the importance of engaging in good faith negotiations with the NFLPA.

The current collective bargaining agreement expires in March.
