SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Quarterback Alex Smith is inactive for the San Francisco 49ers' game against St. Louis.

Troy Smith is making his second straight start Sunday for the 49ers, who dressed just two quarterbacks to face the Rams.

Alex Smith separated his left shoulder during the 49ers' loss to the Carolina Panthers last month. The former No. 1 draft pick
didn't participate in much of last week's practices following San Francisco's bye week.

David Carr will back up Troy Smith, who capped his first start for the 49ers by leading a late rally in a win over Denver two weeks ago in London.
