Macon native wins title at MIAA Championships

HAYS, KAN. -- Sophomore Karen Grauel became the first Truman women’s cross country runner to win the individual title at the MIAA Championships on Saturday, completing the six-kilometer course in 21:18.10.

Grauel (Macon, Mo., Macon) won by 14 seconds over Angela Adams of Northwest Missouri to claim the individual championship and earn all-MIAA honors. Cindy Springman was the last individual champion for Truman, winning the last MAIAW championship in 1980.

The Bulldogs finished a disappointing sixth in the team race with 140 points. Truman entered the race as the second ranked team in the South Central region. Pittsburg State, who was ranked above the Bulldogs in the region, won the meet with 44 points, followed by Missouri Southern (99 points), Northwest Missouri (104 points), Southwest Baptist (127 points) and Fort Hays State (134 points).

Anne Ratermann (Florissant, Mo., Rosati Kain) earned honorable mention all-MIAA honors with an 11th place finish after crossing the line in 22:17.00.  Deborah Boedeker (Florissant, Mo., McCluer North) was 33rd, Amanda Brown (Lebanon, Mo., Buffalo) finished 47th and Hannah Farnsworth (Wheaton, Ill., Wheaton North) placed 48th.

The Bulldogs will next compete for a spot in the national championship race two weeks from now at the NCAA South Central regional in Warrensburg, Mo.
