IOWA CITY, IOWA (AP) -- Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says there's no timetable for the return of sophomore running back Brandon Wegher, but he's cautiously optimistic that Wegher will rejoin the Hawkeyes this season.
Wegher rushed for 641 yards and eight touchdowns last season, but he left fall camp last Sunday. The coach says Wegher needed to sort through some personal issues.
Wegher entered camp listed as a backup to Adam Robinson. With Wegher's status unclear and reserve Jewel Hampton set to serve a one-game suspension after an offseason arrest, Robinson will likely start Iowa's season opener against Eastern Illinois on Sept. 4.
After an open scrimmage Saturday, Ferentz said Wegher intends to stay in school. The coach doesn't believe the logjam at running back contributed to Wegher's departure.
