AKRON, OHIO (AP) -- Hunter Mahan has won the Bridgestone Invitational for his first World Golf Championship title. The bonus was a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

Tiger Woods shot 77 on Sunday and finished with his highest score ever, 18-over 298, to tie for 78th. That opened the way for
Phil Mickelson to take over the No. 1 ranking by finishing fourth at Firestone. Instead, Mickelson shot a 78.

Mahan ran off five birdies on the front nine to take the lead. He then made big par saves down the stretch to finish at 6-under 64. He won for the second time this year, the earlier victory coming at the Phoenix Open.

Mahan has played on the last three U.S. teams, always as a captain's pick. He earned $1.4 million and moved up to No. 2 in the
standings with one more qualifying event.
