PEBBLE BEACH, CALIF. (AP) -- Tiger Woods unleashed one of his trademark charges to have a legitimate shot at his 15th major tournament title.

The world's No. 1-ranked golfer recovered from two early bogeys and reeled off eight birdies during his 5-under 66 to get within
five shots of the lead in his spectacular third round at Pebble Beach.

Woods finished with three straight birdies on a day when he made eight. He barely missed making an eagle-3 on Pebble Beach's famed 18th, but settled for a tap-in birdie. He shot 31 on his back nine for his best stretch of golf since returning from a five-month layoff this winter.

Dustin Johnson, a two-time winner of the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am event held each February, also shot a 66 and has the lead at 6-under par. Second-round leader Graeme McDowell, the journeyman from Northern Ireland, is three back. Ernie Els and Frenchman Gregory Havret are tied for fourth, six shots back.

Phil Mickelson shot 2-over 73 and is seven off the lead.
