PEBBLE BEACH, CALIF. (AP) -- The USGA's executive director says Tiger Woods was wrong to criticize the greens at Pebble Beach as "awful" after the opening round of the U.S. Open.

David Fay said Saturday he doesn't mind an opinion, but that Woods had his facts wrong.

Fay says some of the best superintendents in the country have the putting surfaces rolling better than they ever have at Pebble
Beach, especially for being the poa annua strain of grass.

He noted that two players used the word awful after the first round Thursday - Phil Mickelson to describe his putting, and Woods
to lay the blame on the greens.

Woods opened with a 74 and is seven shots behind going into the weekend.
