Mickelson figures out Pebble, moves into 2nd place

PEBBLE BEACH, CALIF. (AP) -- Phil Mickelson has finished a round of 5-under-par 66 at Pebble Beach to climb within two shots of the lead at the halfway point of the U.S. Open.  

In search of the second leg of the Grand Slam, Mickelson birdied five holes on the front nine Friday and finished the day at 1-under 141 - two shots behind leader Graeme McDowell. Tied with Mickelson at 1 under were Ernie Els, Dustin Johnson and Ryo Ishikawa. 

Tiger Woods shot 1-over 72 and was seven shots off the lead after a cloudy, breezy day at Pebble Beach that was more condusive for scoring than Thursday, but produced only five rounds in the 60s.
