TOPEKA, KAN. -- Freshman Brett Budd combined for four hits in a Sunday doubleheader at Washburn (Kan.) University, but the Truman baseball team fell behind early twice and lost 8-7 and 7-1 at Falley Field in Topeka, Kansas. The Bulldogs (3-10, 0-6 MIAA) trailed 7-2 in game one before posting a big rally in defense of starter Kyle Veazey. A five-run, six-hit inning in the top half of the fifth – keyed by five straight hits in front of Budd doubling in Steven Rose – knotted the score at 7-7.
Truman couldn’t get another run across, and, after Tyler Stefan (0-3) pitched out of a jam in the sixth-inning, Washburn (7-3, 7-3 MIAA) got an RBI single in the last half of the seventh to score the game-winner and pick up the 8-7 win.
In game two, Bulldog starter Michael Staihr (0-1) was saddled with a hard-luck loss after giving up five unearned runs in the first inning before shutting down the Ichabods for four more innings. Budd came through with the only RBI for Truman, plating Rose again – this time in the sixth – but WU scored twice more in their half of the seventh in the nine-inning game to win, 7-1. Matthew Grosch gave up two runs in relief of Staihr, with Grant Daniels throwing a scoreless eighth inning.
Budd went 4-for-7 on the day with two RBI, while Rose added a 3-for-6 afternoon with a double and a pair of walks. Sophomore Devon Myers also drove in two on the day for Truman.
The Bulldogs and Ichabods will wrap up their four-game series on Monday afternoon at 12 p.m.
