The Truman Swimming teams opened up the New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Championships on Wednesday night in Cleveland, Miss.
Julia Jones paced the women’s team with a second in the 1000 while Brian Tillis led the men with a third in the men’s 1000.
Jones, who holds the conference record in the 1000 free, touched the wall in 10:31.30 and finished second to Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) swimmer Megan Young.
Stephanie Myers was fourth in the race with a time of 10:39.66 to earn Truman 32 points in the event.
Tillis edged out Delta State’s (Miss.) Wolfgang Mairinger by two-tenths of a second to place third in the men’s 1000 free.
Tillis finished in 9:35.08 which is the fastest time for him in the event this season and an NCAA B-Cut mark.
The other scoring event contested on the first of four nights of action was the 200 Medley Relay.
The team of Stacey Wymer, Jessica Jenkot, Tanya Sylvester and Carina Pautz finished fourth in the finals with a time of 1:48.61 while the group of Kate Aherne, Emily Buss, Alyssa Smith and Lexi Houser finished second in the B-finals with a time of 1:47.91, just missing an A-cut time.
In the men’s 200 Medley, Truman’s top team of Matt Fletcher, Tony Hernandez, Andrew McCall and Taylor Frymire were disqualified in the A-Final while Greg Taplin,
Jerod Simek, Nathan Hardy and Alex Felton finished fourth in the B-Final.
Truman women have 76 points and trail first place Henderson State (Ark.) by 12 heading into the second day while the men have 52 points and trail Missouri S&T by 36.
