JEFFERSON CITY, MO (AP) -- Gov. Jay Nixon says the University of Missouri should consider joining the Big Ten Conference if it gets
an offer.
The Big Ten announced earlier this week that it will be exploring whether to expand over the next 12-to-18 months. It did
not mention which schools it might add, if it decided to do so. The University of Missouri-Columbia currently is part of the Big
12 Conference.
Nixon says his alma mater should be open to the possibility of switching, primarily because he says the Big Ten has some excellent academic programs.
The governor acknowledges that sports also would be a factor. But he says Missouri could continue to play archrival Kansas each year, even if it changed conferences.
