Both Truman swimming teams finished second at the University of Iowa Invitational over the weekend in Iowa City. The women, led by Kate Aherne, had 10 A-cut performances while the men achieved eight B-cut times.
Aherne hit A-cut marks in the 100 Free, 200 IM, 200 Free and 100 Back as well as in both the 200 Medley Relay and 800 Free Relays. She took first for the team in both freestyle events.
Other individuals that qualified for nationals were Julia Jones (400 IM), Anna Grinter (200 Fly), Emily Buss (200 Breaststroke & 400 Medley Relay) and Stacey Wymer (200 Back & 400 Medley Relay).
Tanya Slyvester, Kendra Brunkow, Krista Tippin, Jessica Jenkot and Lexi Hauser were members of relay teams that made A-cut times. Truman’s 400 Medley Relay team consisting of Sylvester, Brunkow, Buss and Aherne won the event with a time of 3:51.89.
Jerod Simek had three B-cut times to pace the men to a second place team finish. Simek finished fourth in the 400 IM and second in the 1650 free while swimming a B-Cut time of 4:37.00 in the prelims of the 500 free.
Brian Tillis and Tony Hernandez each had two B-cut marks. Tillis finished fourth in the 500 Free and third in the 1650 Free while Hernandez was second in the 100 Breast and third in the 200 Breast.
Robert Fletcher finished fourth in the 200 Breast with a B-cut mark of 2:07.77.
The men’s team swam a bit shorthanded during the meet as Senior Andrew McCall missed the first two days while interviewing for the prestigious Rhodes scholarship. McCall rejoined the team on Sunday finishing eighth in the A-Finals of the 100 Free and was third as a member of the 400 Free relay team.
McCall also found out on Sunday that he was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship and is just one of 32 college students in the nation and first student at Truman State University to earn this distinction.
