DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Unexpected expenses for the athletics programs of the states two largest universities could force the schools to dip into cash reserves.

The University of Iowa has asked the state Board of Regents to approve $2.2 million in spending to replace the storm water
drainage system at Kinnick Stadium and replace its natural grass with synthetic turf.

Iowa State University, meanwhile, is reporting that it may spend as much as $1.75 million on costs related to replacing former
football coach Gene Chizik with new head coach Paul Rhoads and his staff.

Hawkeye athletic director Gary Barta says he understands its awkward to request large amounts of money, given across the board cutbacks at both schools. But Barta says he has no choice.
