(AP) -- Former University of Iowa sports information director George Wine has died of a heart attack at the age of 81.

The school says Wine died Thursday at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, two days after undergoing hip replacement surgery.

Wine served as the sports information director for the Hawkeyes from 1968-1993.

He later co-wrote football coach Hayden Fry's autobiography, "The High Porch Picnic," and in 2006 was inducted into the Kinnick Stadium Media Wall of Fame.

Wine was born in Omaha and went to high school in North English, Iowa.

He served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1954, graduated from Iowa two years later and was the sports information director at what is now Northern Iowa and Memphis before returning to his alma mater.
