The new Census estimates are in and population growth can be seen in both Iowa and Missouri.

Iowa gained 10,089 overall, even though nearly two-thirds of the counties lost population between 2011 and 2012. Many of the population declines happened in rural areas where aging populations are dying off while younger residents move to urban areas in search of work.

The biggest population gains were reported in Polk, Johnson, Dallas, Scott and Linn counties.Missouri’s population grew about 13,000, a growth rate of 0.2 percent.

St. Charles County led the population increase with a gain of 3,685 residents, followed by Greene, Boone, Clay and Jackson. Holt County had the biggest loss of residents with 3.3 percent decrease.

The Census numbers are subject to revision.
