KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- The 2013 Martin Luther King Junior Collegiate Challenge took place Monday across portions of the Heartland. One of the many volunteer locations was that of the Adair County Humane Society where there was plenty of work to keep the volunteers busy.

“Its 7 degrees today and its freezing and the dogs are really cold so we needed a wind breaker so we nailed those to the wall. We also put some hay inside the dog kennels to keep them warm because its so cold here and then the last thing we did was take all the dogs on a walk so that they could clean out the cages and get them clean and so the dogs could go to the bathroom and its really been a great experience so far I mean who wouldn't want to spend the day with this adorable guy,” said Julia Gassert.

Even with the frigid temperatures, volunteers say it was worth braving the elements for the experience, and they would recommend the experience to everyone.

“I just want to encourage everyone to do this because its really an awesome experience and to be able to you know spend a day when i could be sleeping or watching tv, but I woke up at 8 o'clock to come out here and to see probably like 200 other college students doing it. It’s a really awesome experience and really rewarding. So I hope other people get the chance to do it,” Gassert said.
