Freshman Alexis Heffernan scored three goals in 12 minutes in the first half, and sophomore Melanie Hunt put her name in Bulldog history with a program-record four assists, as the No. 18 Truman women’s soccer team blanked Lindenwood 5-0 on Sunday afternoon.

In a match that saw the Bulldogs (9-2-1, 5-1 MIAA) out-shoot Lindenwood (4-6-2, 0-6 MIAA) 29-4, it took until the 31st minute before Heffernan got Truman on the board by converting a Hunt pass into the top left corner of the net.

In the 39th minute, Heffernan found herself in the right place at the right time, as, after a Hunt corner kick found the middle of the box, junior Hayley Bollwerk skipped a pass across to an open Heffernan who tapped it in for a 2-0 Bulldog advantage.

Then, just four minutes later in the 43rd, Heffernan cleaned up a Hunt shot off the crossbar and headed it in for the first Truman hat trick since October 20, 2008, when Jessica Wiegert put three on the board against Nebraska-Omaha. For Heffernan, it marked her third, fourth and fifth goals of the season.

A balanced and deep Bulldog squad continued to attack, as Hunt was credited with another assist off a corner kick when sophomore Laurent Seawright poked a loose ball past the Lion keeper for a 4-0 lead in the 71st minute.

Finally, Bollwerk added to her daily stat line with a goal in the 80th minute off a pass by freshman Mega Frkovic for the 5-0 final tally.

Hunt – who now leads the Bulldogs with six assists on the season – became the first Truman player in program history to record four assists in a single game.

It had been nearly a decade since a Bulldog had totaled three in a match, with the last being Anna Sonderman against Washburn on Sept. 14, 2003.

Junior keeper Emily Bozdeck made two saves in net, earning her MIAA-leading eighth shutout of the season.

The Bulldogs also scored five in a match for the first time since putting a 5-0 shutout on Southwest Baptist on Oct. 10, 2009.

Truman will go for win No. 10 on Friday (Oct. 12) evening in a 6:00 pm road match at Washburn (Kan.) University.
