KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- A long history of driving while intoxicated convictions could soon land a Heartland man in state prison.

James Steele, 36, of Kirksville is charged with DWI-chronic offender following his arrest earlier this month. For Steele, who has four previous convictions for DWI, it could mean significant jail time. In addition to the DWI convictions, Steele has two previous felony convictions, which qualifies him as a persistent offender according to Adair County Prosecutor Matt Wilson.

Wilson tells KTVO, the long string of convictions could land Steele in prison on a sentence of 10 years to life.

According to court papers, Steele was arrested by Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers after he was spotted crossing the centerline several times while driving on Highway 11 in Adair County.

Steele, who also has two probation violation warrants, is being held without bond, in the Adair County jail.
