(AP) - The Kansas City Royals have recalled infielder Yuniesky Betancourt from his minor league rehab assignment and optioned Irving Falu to Triple-A Omaha.

Betancourt has been out with a high right ankle sprain that initially occurred during spring training and hampered him through April.

He was hitting .280 when he went on the disabled list.

Falu, a utility infielder, hit .326 in 12 games with the Royals.

Manager Ned Yost said the Royals decided to send Falu back to Omaha rather than Johnny Giavotella because they like Giavotella's bat off the bench late in games.

Giavotella struggles playing the field at second base but has shown some power at the plate.
