EMPORIA, Kan. – Jennifer Zweifel broke her second school record in the triple jump and Joey Walls claimed the teams’ only conference title as the Bulldogs wrapped up the 2012 MIAA Track & Field Championships on Sunday.
Walls edged out the meet’s top point scorer, Laban Sialo (Central Missouri) by three-hundredths of a second to win the 1500 meter run on Sunday.
Walls ran 3:54.79 while Sialo crossed in 3:54.82.
Walls also took fourth in the 800 meter run while Matt Schaefer was sixth. Walls crossed in 1:55.92 and Schaefer in 1:56.93 Elsewhere on the men’s side on Sunday, Ryan Peterson finished third with a personal best time of 47.77 in the 400 meter dash.
For the second straight day, Zweifel broke a school record, set an NCAA automatic qualifying mark but finished second in her event.
Zweifel bested her Truman triple jump record by going 41-05.00 but took second to Central Missouri’s Jenna Schmidt. Schmidt leaped 42-01.50 and had a 1.4 wind advantage over Zweifel during her winning jump.
Zweifel’s jump is the fourth best in Division II this season and now has her set in both the Long and Triple jumps at the Outdoor Championships at the end of May.
Karen Grauel finished second to the MIAA’s top scorer on the women’s side Twishana Williams (Lincoln) in the 5000 meter run. Grauel ran 17:49.80 to Williams’ 17:46.95.
It was the second, second for Grauel who took the silver in the 10K on Saturday. Cindy Grauel was fifth, crossing in 18:12.30.
Anne Ratermann was third in the 800 meter run. Ratermann finished in 2:14.29.
She placed ninth in the 1500 with a time of 4:52.55.
Lisa Kucharski took fifth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.49.
The women scored 51 points to finish seventh in the league standings as Lincoln University brought home the women’s title.
The men scored 32 points to finish in ninth behind champion Pittsburg State (Kan.).
Members of the teams will return to Emporia next weekend for the last chance meet.
