FAIRFIELD, IOWA -- The Fairfield Volunteer Center chose to join forces with the Fairfield Fire Department on Tuesday in honor of 9-11.
Several volunteers from throughout the community showed up to help with landscaping the front of the station planting flowers, restoring the pre-existing bench and historic fire bell.
The day was all about remembering.
“The fire department, no matter whether it’s New York, Fairfield, Iowa, wherever, we're a family. And when that happened on September 11, not only us, I don't think there's anyone in America that didn't just stop and really do a gut check and just think of not only what we have but just -- now this day 11 years later to be able to commemorate this is special,” said Fairfield Fire Chief Scott Vaughan.
And for Chief Vaughan the day was about family, as his son was helping alongside with the project.
Donations from various area businesses helped to make the day possible and Vaughan said the department is very thankful.
