OTTUMWA, IOWA -- On the general election ballot this November, along with president and governor, Wapello County residents will have the opportunity to vote on the Local Option Sales Tax.

Each incorporated city in the county will have their own uses for the tax.

In Ottumwa, the city has paid off the Bridge View Center and officials now want to change the use of the Local Option Sales Tax to sewer and street construction.

County supervisors said it’s vital that people support this tax for a number of reasons, one being if they don’t, then they will see their sewer tax skyrocket.

“For those of us, the county residents, we're not going to change our use but 25% of what we receive goes into rural property tax reduction. So people would see a hike on their property taxes and 50% for bridges and culverts which are -- we've done over the last 12 years dozens of bridges with this that we couldn't have done otherwise,” said Steve Siegel, Wapello County Supervisor.

If passed, the Local Option Sales Tax would run until 2025.
